Two fishermen stop to check out each other's catch, while the sun sets behind them in glorious hues of orange, yellow and purple. This inkwell is one of the beautiful and desirable Nippon inkwells made between 1889 and 1921. It bears the green M in Wreath Nippon mark, as well as a label, possibly put there by a previous owner.
This inkwell has a wraparound design, featuring small boats on one side and back and a boat with windmill in the distance on the other side. A geometric design surrounds the top and the edge of the lid, while the sunset colors are repeated in the lid's center.
All pieces are intact, including the original insert. All are in very good condition. The only problem this inkwell has is that someone spattered a few drops of ink, the largest of which is on the front next to the boat. The others are all pin prick sized and are scarcely noticeable.
The inkwell measures 2 3/4" square and 2 1/4" high. These inkwells are not easily found, especially with the insert. It would be a great addition to either a Nippon or an inkwell collection
