CHRISTMAS IN SEPTEMBER SALE BEESWAX SANTA 1980'S!
This listing is for a Beeswax figure in the shape of an Old World Santa. It was given to me in the late 1980's when I was still teaching, and you can see that even then, it was a pricey piece, or at least I thought it was. These figures were used in lots of table decorations, and some people even added them to wreaths. I remember seeing several sizes of these on a mantle in an old Country Decorating magazine or book. I get him out every year, but if someone else would enjoy him, I have no problem letting him go, since I just keep adding more and more to my collections!
He stands 7 1/2" tall and still has a sprig of Christmas greens tucked into his side. The molding is just super on these old pieces, and he really, really does look like he's from the "Old Country!" The art of carving wax into holiday treasures is an old German tradition. They used the old candy molds to make them into different shapes. I think when I first got him, he probably had a waxy scent, but there's no scent with him now, so if scents bother you, this one won't like a newer one might. This old guy is nearly 30 years old!
***Just read that over time these get a powdery film on them called "bloom," which is an indication of the purity of the beeswax. This is easily removed by buffing with a soft, lint free cloth, rinsing under warm(not hot) water. Or you can use a blow dryer on a low setting a few inches away from the figure. This will bring the shine back, and also freshens the "sweet honey fragrance" these beeswax products are so famed for.
