Victorian porcelain hinged box, completely hand painted with a portrait painted on the lid, framed by garlands of pink roses, with a wooded lake in the background. There are blue and purple ribbons and bows painted around the sides of the piece. The portrait features a young woman in eighteenth century dress wearing a large plumed hat. The box measures 2 3/4" in diameter or 3" in diameter from latch to hinge and is 2" tall. This is a very old box, unmarked and in very good condition for it's age with original hinge and latch. There are shallow, well worn spots on the bottom of the box where it has rested on a table for well over a century. The latch and hinge are still good and the box closes snugly. The painting is still bright and unworn. Since this piece is unmarked, it was made prior to the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891, requiring the name of the country where the porcelain was made to be printed on each piece. France was already printing their country of origin as part of the mark starting in 1867, and Germany did this starting in 1885. I can't be sure the box is French but it was made prior to 1890, and likely several decades before, circa 1870.
