A small or miniature French Needlework Memorial Sampler, dated 1838: “Eugene Parti le 26 Mai, 1838. C. R.” Translated, I believe this means “Eugene Died (departed) May 26, 1838.” The initials “C. R.” are probably those of the maker. The sampler is stitched in an olive green (dull green) silk thread on a coarse linen backing. It has a stitched border. The sampler measures 5 1/8” x 7 7/8” and is framed in a mid-20th century wooden frame (from Lanneau’s Art Store in Charleston, SC). Condition is very fine: there are no holes or stains and the stitch work is complete. Everyone has their own definition of “Miniature” and I will let you be the judge about this one.
