A very nice Victorian Sewing Bird or Clamp with a pincushion in original fabric covering. Ornate decorations on the bird, post and key-screw. Right wing tip stamped “Patented” and left wing tip reads “Feb 15 1853.” The bird itself is 3 ½” from beak to tail and about 5 3/4” high (with the clamp fully open)
Very fine condition: the clamp works snugly, the screw-pin fastens tightly and there are no splits, breaks or rust on the tin bird. Pincushion retains the original pink (faded) velvet cloth, which is complete and without tears, etc, but it does show minor wear. The clamp was fastened to the edge of a table and cloth head tight in the birds mouth so a stitcher would have a taut piece of fabric to work with. A nice example.
