A late 19th Century Grain Painted, Inlaid Sewing or Document Box. The inlay on the box lid is in the shape of fans, with a large Cross in the middle; the initials “L.N.” are inlaid under the lock and the molding around the lid and the base are “arrow-heads. The box measures 12” x 7 ½” x 5” (high). There are no inside partitions, etc. and it retains a lock and key mechanism; the key fits the lock but the lock does not work. The hinges are probably original.
The box has a very mellow surface. It is in very good condition with only some slight rubbing on the right side: the inlay on the top and on the front is complete; there is a small piece missing out of the right-rear corner in the molding around the bottom (see photo), and another, tiny piece out of the top molding in the upper-left corner. There is also a sliver of the base missing in the back left, but the box is solid and otherwise complete. I do not know if this piece is American or Continental, but it makes for a nice dresser or storage box. And, of course, you can put your sewing material in it very nicely! Shipping weight will be just over 6 pounds.
