A very nice carved and painted Nuthatch on a driftwood perch, signed on the underside of the base “R. C. Mitchell, ’80.” I believe this to be Roger C. Mitchell of Kingston, MA, a prominent mid-20th century decoy and decorative bird carver. This bird is life sized, perhaps a bit larger: the bird itself measures 4” from beak to tail, and overall, the carving (including the driftwood that the bird is perched on) measures about 6”; the shaped wooden base is approximately 4 ½” x 2 ¼”.
The base has “R. C. Mitchell, ‘80” etched into the bottom. The piece is in excellent condition: no chips, cracks, breaks, etc. The paint is good with mellow colors and the detailed carving shows great skill. The wings and tail, in particular, are very delicately carved.
