A pristine and charming Jesse Blackstone Miniature Carved Red Breasted Nuthatch. Blackstone (1909-1988) was born in Massachusetts, but did his carving in New Hampshire. He has become one of the premier carvers of 20th century songbirds.
This Red Breasted Nuthatch measures 3 ½” from beak to tail and overall height, including the oval perch is 2”. The base of the carving is signed with Blackstone’s unique ‘inter-twined JB” signature and it is numbered 443 – Blackstone was meticulous and numbered all of his carvings; 443 means it was the 443rd Red Breasted Nuthatch that he carved (supposedly, he carved 458 or this species). The bird is in excellent condition: strong paint and no chips, nicks, rubs, etc. A delightful piece worthy of any collection.
