Team of 2 Velveteen Covered Horses on Wheeled Platforms, c. 1890-1900
Need a team of horses to pull your sled or wagon? Here is a wonderful pair of velveteen or cloth-covered horses, mounted on shaped, wheeled platforms (connect by wooden strips). The horses themselves are wooden and they have harnesses and bridles with a chain between their chest pieces. Horsehair manes and tail and button eyes. Each horse is about 10” from nose to tail and 8 ½” high; the platforms are 10” x 3” (widest point) and overall height is 10”.
Fine condition with no major problems: they obviously have been played with and they show some surface soiling and some scattered pulls in the velveteen, but not hole or tears. The ears are pretty much gone, but the manes and tails are full. All 4 eyes are present and the harnesses and bridles are complete. There apparently was a piece of tack across the withers on both horses: it is completely gone on one and only partially there on the other.
Occasionally, you see single horses like these but this is the only time I’ve seen a pair. I don’t know if these came from the factory this way or if some enterprising person made a very special toy for a child.
