A small, English Needlework Motto Sampler with 3 verses, bouquets of flowers, birds and an 1842 date. The needlework is extremely tiny silk cross stitch (carpal tunnel waiting to happen!) on extremely fine linen backing. There are 2 panels, the left panel with 2 separate verses separated by a bouquet of flowers. Upper Left Verse reads: Sweet is the Love that Never Cools and the Lower Left Verse: Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder. The Right hand panel includes one longer verse, divided by flowers and birds: The Golden Chain of Godliness Is Entwined with Roses of Love.
The sampler measures 8 ½” x 4 ¾” and is framed in an old, but not original (I don’t think) Birdseye maple frame with gold liner (frame size is 12 ¼” x 8 3/8”.
Sampler is in fine to very fine condition: the colors are mellow (what you would expect in a love-token such as this). There are a couple of places on the right panel with the original stitches were replace (with bright pink thread): the person who re-stitched (2 words, essentially) did not have nearly the skill of the original stitcher. There are 2 small holes in the linen: top center, about ¼” diameter, effecting only the very top of the stitched cable divider and the top margin, and another, smaller, outside the stitched border on the upper left side. There are no stains or other problems.
