A small, dark green bail handled covered firkin in its original surface. The firkin, which dates to the last half of the 19th century, is about 6 ½” high and 6 ¼” in diameter at the top. Fingered construction with copper tacks: the is one finger on the lid and one on each of the 2 bands on the base. Wonderful, dry surface (the dark green has oxidized to the point where it looks almost black, but it is green – a British Racing Green!).
The firkin is in excellent condition: the painted surface is complete without any rubbing. The staves are tight and secure. A couple of minor splits in the bottom band, along with a nick in the bottom edge of the bottom band. The bail handle and fastener are original. A very desirable size in a wonderful original surface.
