A dark blue (called Historical Blue) Staffordshire platter showing a man herding 2 cattle and 2 sheep, with a house in the background. There is a bold leaf and flower border with swags. The platter is 17” x 13” and is a meat platter about 2” deep. It carries the round Adams mark on the bottom, and according to the Transferware Collectors Club Database it is “Pastoral #2.
The platter is in very fine condition: there are no chips, cracks, lines or restorations. The dark blue color is intense. Although the surface is not as shiny as some I have seen, I believe this to be a firing issue; there is also some rubbing on the bottom edge, but that is probably from use. Domestic animals are always favorite themes for Staffordshire platters and this one certainly gets your attention.
