A rare and very desirable late 18th century Chip Carved, Frisian Slide Lid Candle Box with compass decoration. The box is carved out of a solid piece of (very) hard wood: there are zig-zag grooves on the sides and free-hand compass circles on the lid. Each circle is about 2 ½" in diameter. There are initials ("S.O.H") carved in the bottom and "1800." I believe that these initials and the date were carved well after the box was made. The box may be from Pennsylvania, or it may have originated in Northern Europe. 12" x 3 ½" x 3 ¼" (H). Excellent condition with only one short, non-threatening split about 1 ½" long, connected to the groove that the lid slides in. The carving is very crisp and complete. Some light rubbing on the lid, and I do believe at one point this box was painted (wouldn't that have been rather spectacular to see!).
