A 4 3/8" diameter American Historical Staffordshire cup plate showing the Landing of Lafayette at Castle Garden, NY, in 1824. The cup plate dates to c. 1825 and was produced by James & Ralph Clews. The dark blue transfer show Lafayette's arrival in New York Harbor marking his triumphal return to the United States almost 50 years after the end of the American Revolution. It was, and remains, one of the most important and popular of the American Historical Staffordshire views.
The cup plate had a flat rim with floral border (there are several varieties of this plate). It carries the impressed Clews crown mark. The color is strong and the transfer crisp. No cracks, lines or restorations, only 2 small edge chips: a 1/16" flick at about 5 o'clock and a slightly larger, shallow 1/8" chip at 4 o'clock.
