An extremely dark cobalt blue Staffordshire Dinner plate, 10" in diameter, with a delightful transfer entitled Cherubs (or Cupids) Flying. From an Adams series made for the American market, c. 1820, the plate has a pair of cherubs (some think they may be fairies) flying over a Chinoiserie landscape. There is a floral border and the plate is marked with an impressed Adams eagle mark.
The condition of this plate is wonderful: extremely dark blue transfer, that is crisp and clear. There are no chips, cracks, lines or restorations on the plate. Stilt marks in the margin and a tiny stone or sand ping on the right shoulder of the cherub on the left are the only blemishes to a glossy and undisturbed (otherwise) glaze! A hard to find plate in any size, the 10" dinner plate is particularly scarce.
