An extremely dark cobalt blue Staffordshire plate title "The Valentine" from the Wilkie's Design Series by James & Ralph Clews, c. 1825. The transfer on the plate shows a boisterous tavern scene (in the world of English Ceramics Dealers, "naughty" is not a word used frequently, but this transfer is one of the few with a "naughty," albeit informal, subtitle: "The Groper," for reasons that will become obvious when you look closely at the bald gentleman's left hand...). There is a bold floral border and the plate has both a blue cartouche ("The Valentine from Wilkie's Design") and an impressed Clews Warranted Staffordshire crown mark.
The color on this plate is about as dark a cobalt blue as you will find. It is in very fine condition, with no chips, cracks, lines, etc. The glaze is thick and shiny, with only couple of utensil marks (scratches) in the jacket of the bald man seated at the table. A nice example from this popular and important series.
