An early 19th Century (c. 1820 or so) Blue Leeds Shell Edge Child's Reward Plate: For Dutiful Behaviour. The plate's transfer shows 2 vignettes: a boy riding a large dog and another boy with a fishing pole. The plate is 6 ¼" in diameter and has a molded shell edge. There are no chips, cracks or damage, but the plate has been restored – before I purchased it. The restoration was probably done a while ago and probably involved fixing a large crack through the center of the plate (or perhaps the plate was broken into 2 or more pieces and glued back together and over-sprayed). The only visual evidence of the repair is the dull-ish surface that is a slightly different color white than the border.

Reward plates (and mugs) were quite popular in the period, as a way of rewarding children for good behavior, good performances in school, for going to church regularly, etc. They are highly sought-after by collectors.
