Dark Blue American Historical Staffordshire Soup Bowl: City of Albany from Shell Border Series by Wood, c. 1830
A dark blue American Historical Staffordshire soup or stew bowl showing Albany, New York, from Enoch Wood's Shell Border Series. The central view shows the city of Albany from the east side of the Hudson River. There are cows grazing in the foreground and boats, including a paddle wheel steamboat, on the river. The border includes large shells of various kinds. The plate is marked with both an impressed Enoch Wood & Sons eagle mark and with a blue cartouche "City of Albany, State of New York" with an eagle and shield, as well as a banner "E Pluribus Unum."
This bowl is in good to very good condition, but there are a few minor blemishes. There are no cracks, lines or restorations, but there is an under edge chip (1/2" x 5/8") at about 3 o'clock that is not visible from the front side. There is some rubbing on the inner edge and a couple of vertical scratches on the surface of the plate, the longest measuring about ¾" (just over the bow of the steamboat). A very difficult to find American historical view.
