A mid-19th Century Seaweed Decorated Mocha Ware Mustard Pot with lid. Black dendritic decoration on an olive green slip band, with sky blue lines for highlight. Foliated handles and a pearlware glaze. The mustard pot is about 3" to the top of the finial and 2 7/8" in diameter at the top. No marks. The mustard pot retains what I believe is its original lid: even though it does not fit snugly – it sits a little high in the well of the pot – the decoration and colors are identical, making a marriage seem most unlikely. Condition is good to very good. The base of the pot is in very fine condition with no chips, cracks, lines or repairs, only some edge rubbing around the inner rim and a tiny area (less than ¼") where the blue line has flaked, left side, near the handle. The lid does not have any cracks or lines, and the finial is undamaged, but there are 2 chips, one large (almost ¾") and one small (about 1/4") on the edge, and some edge roughness (most of it being underglaze). An excellent display piece in a desirable and hard to find (especially with its lid) Mocha form.
