A Blue Edge Pearlware Ribbon or Fruit Basket with matching Undertray. Both the basket and the tray have basketweave decoration on the bottoms, highlighted in blue; the 'wraps' around the top edge and the mid section of the basket are also highlighted with dark cobalt blue enamel. The only marks on the pieces are a '3' on the underside of the basket and an impressed '10' and 'HI' (or 'IH') on the underside of the tray.
The basket is football-shaped and measures 9 1/2" x 7"; it is 2 3/4" deep. The tray is also football shaped and measures 10 3/4" x 7 1/2" and the edge sits about 7/8" off the table.
The basket and undertray are in excellent condition, considering their age and how fragile they are, especially the basket. There are no chips or cracks in either piece, and this includes the delicate ribbons that make up the sides of the basket. There are a couple of small (about 1/8") glaze rubs or pops on the ribbons: these are not chips but places with the glaze has rubbed off, perhaps because of a kiln bubble. There is also one wrap on the top edge of the basket where the clay must have broken in the making: this little section is missing, but the blue highlight enamel was continued and overglazed, making the missing piece virtually unnoticeable. The undertray has some edge rubbing of the glaze and a couple ares on the outer edge where the blue enamel has bubbled (see photo): this could be kiln damage (too close to its neighbor). In any event, the minor issues that this piece exhibits are more than made up for by its 'presence' and its strong visual appeal. This basket would have been used to hold fruit or chestnuts.
