A rare double transfer dark blue Historical Staffordshire Cup Plate from Clews Wilkie's Design Series. The view is The Errand Boy and this little 3 1/2" plate has 2 separate transfer, facing opposite directions, without the normal Wilkies Series border. The plate does have the impressed Clews Crown mark and dates c. 1825. In David & Linda Arman's reference work on Historical Staffordshire Cup Plates, Anglo American Ceramic Cup Plates, Part I, it is item #35 on page 13, but incorrectly identified as "Letter of Introduction". It is correctly listed in Armans' original work: "Historical Staffordshire: An Illustrated Check List" (Item #89, p. 43).
This example is in excellent, almost fresh-out-of-the-shipping-barrel condition. The blue color is a dark cobalt, the glaze is shiny without utensil marks and there are no chips, cracks, lines, etc. A hard to find cup plate worthy of any collection.
