From one of the most popular Staffordshire Dinner Series – the Indian Sporting Series – a 10" Dinner Plate in a transfer pattern called Death of the Bear. The scene shows the end of a hunt, with elephant, spear-throwing rider and hunting dogs surrounding the doomed bear. The border includes vignettes of bears, tigers, and other exotic animals (these little images are wonderful – the kind you might expect in children's book illustrations!). This series was made by several different potteries, and this plate carries the Clews impressed Crown mark. Because it was probably made for the American market, this blue is a bit darker than usually found on the Spode version of this series.
The plate is in immaculate condition – almost like it just came out of the shipping barrel. Rich color, shiny glaze and no chips, cracks, lines of repairs. A really nice example of this desirable pattern.
