A reticulated Creamware Basket and matching Undertray, decorated (overglaze) with purple and yellow flowers (they look very much like Johnny-Jump-ups) and green leaves. Both pieces are impressed Davenport and carry a hand-written `254' number (pattern or artisan number) and date c. 1810-1820. This basket most likely would have held fruit or chestnuts and the reticulations are large to allow air circulation. The basket measures 11" (handle-to-handle) X 7" and is 4 ¼" high to the top of the handle; the tray measures 9 ¾" x 7 ¾".
The basket and tray show wonderfully. The enameled colors are strong and cheerful. The tray is in very fine condition: no chips, cracks, lines or repairs. The basket has a well-done professional repair to a line that crossed the bottom; there is no damage to either the handles or the reticulated section.
