A grand entrance needs a grand jewelry statement. Such as this, our Alice Caviness showstopper.
Victorian Revival in style, this collar necklace and earrings set is dripping with glitzy crystals, on a mesh and gilt rope design backdrop.
Caviness is known for imaginative creations, and our demi certainly is one of those. In its use of gilt mesh as a main element, it is also similar to creations by a contemporary, William Hobé. Mesh jewelry was popular in the 1960s, the era when our demi was made.
The gilt mesh adds oomph and pizzazz to an otherwise traditional Victorian Revival motif. In our set's centerpiece, the necklace, the entire collar is made of gilt mesh, a double layer of fine woven metal that resembles lace. Like lace, it even has a scalloped edging!
The center portion of the collar is liberally adorned with swags made of rhinestones and slinky gilt chain, culminating in a flower made of teardrop crystals. Flowing from the flower is a cascade of rhinestone and chain strands. It's truly stunning, check our pictures!
Each earring echoes the crystal floral drop in the necklace.
The necklace is about 15 1/4" long. The width is 2 1/2" along the center drop; the gilt mesh lace is about 1/2". The portion with the rhinestone and gilt chain swags makes up 7" of the length. Necklace has a hidden push-in clasp with the top decorated by a pair of rhinestones.
The earrings are 2 1/8" long and 1/2" wide, and are clipbacks.
Only the necklace is marked: Alice Caviness within an oval cartouche. The earrings are a 100 percent match. It's not unusual for some Caviness pieces to only have the larger pieces signed.
The set is in overall excellent condition, with all original crystals. The only sign of age is that some of the crystals have darkened; they look like "black diamond" rhinestones, and are thus still wonderful. The mesh and chains seem untouched by age, and they look bright and new.
