Long gone are the days when pearls were the ultimate status symbol. According to history, this was during the 1st B.C., when Roman emperor Julius Caesar decreed that only members of the ruling class could wear them.
But the allure of pearls, considered to be the world's oldest gemstone (dating back to 420 B.C.), has not diminished over time. Whether real or fabulous fakes, pearl jewelry is always in demand, especially for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, etc.
To this end, we present for your consideration a most elegant faux pearl and gilt rope chain necklace and earrings set by one of the costume jewelry world's best designers, Marcel Boucher.
This demi dates to the 1950s, and showcases simulated cream seed pearls nestled within twisted rope chains. This design itself is a known Boucher, and he made several variations featuring different faux gemstones. Aside from pearls, I've seen versions with clear rhinestones and faux turquoise cabochons. Our faux pearl version (and the clear one, too), have been cited in online write-ups as great choices for weddings.
The glass seed pearls, on the necklace, occupy a center row that runs along the entire length. It is flanked by twisted gilt chain strands that are attached to the same base as the pearls.
The necklace is choker-length, with a figure "8" gilt extension band that allows for some flexibility in length. With the extension, the necklace measures 14" long ( it is 12 1/2" long, if the extension portion is removed). The necklace has a foldover clasp both on the actual necklace and on the extension band.
Each earring looks like a floral "mum", with all the faux seed pearls clustered in a dome in the center portion. The pearl cluster is surrounded by a gilt rope trim.
The earrings are 7/8" x 7/8" round. They are clipbacks.
All pieces are marked Boucher. The necklace has the stamp on the extension portion. The earrings are stamped Boucher at the base, and also bear the design inventory number 6636, which dates this set to the 1950s.
Our set is in very good to excellent condition, with little visible wear. The faux pearls are all lustrous and intact, with no visible wear to the nacre. The gilt portions are rich in hue and mostly intact.
