Ah, young love! Sweet love. First love?
These all come to mind as I gaze into this ebullient, glowing heart necklace, a famous design by Hubert de Givenchy.
This mid- to late-20th century masterpiece showcases a "jelly belly" lucite heart topped off with a lavender crystal center, and a strand of large white moonglow beads.
About a decade ago, this iconic Givenchy design was easily accessible. In Southern California where we used to live, I could just about find it in any number of antique shops or flea markets that we frequented. But nowadays, it's become scarce and thus more collectible.
Maybe the colors help in this necklace's air of youthful innocence and purity. Maybe it's the clarity of the lucite heart. Maybe it's both plus a bit of that Givenchy touch that makes this necklace attractive.
The lucite heart is a marvel! It's 1 1/8" x 1 1/8", with an impact that's way bigger. The clear domed lucite heart is a throwback to the 1940s-1950s jelly belly creations, but taken up a notch via a lavender crystal center. Both the lucite heart and the oval crystal have thin gilt trims.
The rest of the necklace is made up of large white moonglow beads that are slightly bigger than 1/2" x 1/2" rounds. There are two smaller beads at the ends, where the gilt double "GG" logo end bands are. The necklace has a foldover clasp that connects the two Gs. It is about 16 3/4" long.
The necklace is signed Givenchy on each G, plus at the base of the clasp. The clasp is also stamped Paris and New York.
In overall very good to excellent condition. The lucite is a tad yellowed with age, but is still clear, with little visible surface scuffs. The moonglow beads are also in great shape.
