Stunning! This fabulous Antique French Box dates from the mid-19th Century. Its exotic wood veneer is either Burl Walnut or Kingwood. Other woods yielded by the same genus as Kingwood are cocobolo, rosewood, African blackwood, Bombay blackwood and tulipwood. In this case the most prominent veins of the wood's grain were further enhanced by a hand applied stain or hand painted to add even more drama and visual impact. The box was then French polished to a flawless high sheen. It is marked with a brass plaque engraved E.A. Faviell. Its padded interior is covered in maroon moiré. All ormolu hardware is present and intact. There is a small piece of veneer missing at the bottom right front corner. Please see the last photo. 7 3/8" square x 3" high ( 18.5 x 18.5 x 7.5 cm).
