A large and spectacular Antique Sterling Silver Sporting Trophy with 3 boar tusk handles standing on a black lacquered base. Gilded interior. Champagne bucket size. Engraved as follows: "The A.E. Kemp Trophy for Competition among The Quoiting Clubs of Toronto". The trophy was made by Roden Brothers of Toronto, Canada. It stands 13.75" high overall, 9.75" high and 10" across from handle to handle. It is in excellent condition, the only blemish being some wear to the interior gilding.
Quoiting is a game whereby rings are tossed onto pegs from a given distance. Many versions exist to this day. Please see Wikipedia for extensive information. The 1st Quoiting Clubs were formed in 1841 (Montreal) and 1858 (Toronto). The sport became popular in the United States as well and many contests were held between the 2 Countries. The presenter of this gorgeous silver trophy cup was, and I quote with thanks, Wikipedia: "Sir Albert Edward Kemp, KCMG, PC (August 11, 1858 – August 12, 1929) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Kemp was a Canadian Minister of Militia and Defence and Minister of the Overseas Military Forces during World War I. A Conservative and Unionist, Kemp was elected five times to the Canadian House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for electoral district of Toronto East. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Arthur Meighen in 1921". All in all a sensational late 19th Century piece of Canadian Sporting History. My photos don't do it justice!
