This amusing Sterling Silver and Glass Novelty Decanter is in excellent condition and is fully marked with a profusion of Hallmarks. The maker is CS*FS which stands for the celebrated London Silversmiths Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd. There is a total of 6 marks on the bird's neck including the Registration No 18731 and 3 more marks inside the hinged lid. The blown glass body is a lovely yellow fading to clear at the wings. The eyes are also glass. This little fellow is now 120 years old but looks ultra modern, something that could have been created today by a top designer! It is in excellent condition, no cracks or chips or dents to the silver head. A small hole was drilled in the glass where the wings meet. What the purpose of this was is a puzzle to me. The following has been suggested by a viewer of this posting: "I suspect that the purpose of hole is to allow air to escape when pouring. This would give a smooth pouring action. Without the hole, it would 'glug, glug' and so on and not pour smoothly". Thank you kindly, that sounds entirely plausible. Please see the last photo.
