The watch was a valued commodity and many boxes were made to hold the watch when it was not being worn, or at night. This unusual example is made as a small display cabinet with accents of burr veneer standing on four secure feet and a glass front. Once the side catch is released, it can be opened to reveal an interior with back and all other sides covered in fine petit point which has a circular area on the inside just below a small hook which would have held the watch in position. The watch chain, key and trinkets could also hang from this hook. This section of the design is edged with a swirling pattern of petit point to act as a frame. The other petit point includes sprays of flowers, butterflies, baskets and a house. The overall condition is very good for age apart from some old borer holes at the rear and some scattered surface loss and cracks and staining. This would be a most interesting item to display your antique or vintage watch and would be quite a talking point. Maximum height 9 ins (22.8cm) x maximum width 6.5 ins (16.9cm) x depth 2.5 ins (6.3cm). Weight 540 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 276.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $42.50 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
