This somewhat naïve but interesting spice box has detailed chip-carving on the top and sides – the top section being decorated with the classic six-sided star, serrated edges and deep angled carved-out bands on the body of each box. The two major sections are joined by a narrow treen bar and in the centre of that is a movable large screw so that the top then swivels on the base to reveal two compartments, each with a central divider to create four individual holders for different spices – these are blackened and the carving within them is somewhat uneven. On the base of each main section is a flattened area (its use is unclear). The overall condition is very good for age, (this would date to the 19th century). There are a couple of splits and some chips to the surface but this does not really detract from its appeal. This piece would be very much at home in a country kitchen or within a shabby chic décor. Maximum width 10.5 ins (26.6cm). Weight 824 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside & Out” on page 102. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $50.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
