This is an intriguing waist-hung item which appears to be constructed from ebony with contrasting inlay plus inlaid bone sections. This has a lift-up sliding opening which when closed, is held in position by a movable metal band. Inside there are currently two steel tools (see image). These may have been used for tightening up the holders of packages when travelling. At the narrower end there is a metal loop and ring attached to a leather thong passing to a handle (which is in the shape of a T-bar) and this could have been worn at the waist of the horseman or attached to the possessions carried by his horse. There is a carved out section in the centre of the container which originally may have held a semi-precious stone or other embellishment. The condition is very good for age with a naïve appearance. The tools inside show signs of rust. This would be a fascinating item to include in a collection of Oriental, in particular Tibetan, items. Maximum length complete item 14 ins (35.5cm). Weight 118 grams. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $32.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
