The decoration of this delightful thimble is typical of the remarkable painting done by William Powell at the Royal Worcester factory. His specialty was the painting, on the porcelain, of birds of the British Isles. This lovely example is of a robin which appears to be sitting on a nest with foliage in the surrounds, and the signature, Powell, can be seen. The top of the thimble has the classic indentations and there are two gilt bands – one at the top and the other at the bottom of the thimble. Inside is the puce colour Royal Worcester mark which states ‘Made in England’. As the dot system includes three circles and three dots this would date the piece to 1935. This date is well within Powell’s working period. The overall condition is excellent for age apart from some minuscule unevenness of the rim. The colour of the painting is clear and vibrant. This would be a lovely item to add to any collection of thimbles especially those decorated by this renowned porcelain artist. Maximum height 0.9 ins (2.3cm). Weight 4 grams.
