This watch fob and medal was awarded to a gentleman named M.K. Tate, who it appears was the Editor in Chief of The Case Tech. Case School of Applied Science, in 1909. This is a genuine fob chain – this term is often incorrectly applied to other styles of vest chain. The fob itself is of black grosgrain ribbon and has a swivel for attachment. There is no security chain, so to view the watch the whole item would be removed from the pocket of the vest. The swivel and very short chain hold a long folded black grosgrain ribbon – the back section of this ends with V-cutouts. The front, along with the back, passes through a slide which has the words ‘Editor in Chief 1909’. The ribbon then passes to its fold which holds a large ring which supports a medal. On the front it has the words ‘The Case Tech’ surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped frame stating ‘Case School of Applied Science’ and there is another circular feature which has the words ‘Case School of Applied Science 1880’ and a central insignia with ‘Cleveland. O.’ On the back it has the name M.K. Tate with the date 1909 below and above this is the maker’s mark for ‘Sigler Bros. Clev’d. O’ (rubbed). The overall condition is very good for age. This was obviously a treasured presentation item to the original wearer and is still a most interesting piece with historical significance, and would be lovely to add to your collection of watch chains or to wear. Maximum length 8 ins (20.3cm). Weight 34 grams.
This item appears in my book, "How the Watch was Worn, A Fashion for 500 Years" on page 178.
Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $24.50 USD - with no tracking is cheaper. For shipping cost to other countries, please contact us.
