This is an attractive late Victorian gold guard chain (testing as 9-10 carat) with age-correct swivel (its closing mechanism is however a little loose) – otherwise the condition is excellent for age. This guard chain would be very nice looped twice around the neck with the swivel at the back or the swivel at the front with the addition of your choice of pendant. Some long chains are also called "Muff" chains as they were used to secure the hand-warming muff when it was not in use. Length without swivel 48 ins (121.9cm). Weight 24 grams. This item appears in my book, “How the Watch was Worn, A Fashion for 500 Years” on page 99.
