This is a remarkable Deco Elgin wristwatch as it is complete with its original box. The watch itself is a fantastic example of Art Deco of white gold filled, enhanced with diamonds, chasing and baguette-cut sapphires combined with black and royal blue enamel lines framing the diamond-shaped dial, which is marked for Elgin. It is combined with a decorative open work band, of silver colour. Inside the back of the watch are the statements “Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co. 14K Gold Filled, Illinois Watch Case Co Elgin 8181487”. It apparently has a 7 ruby-jewel mechanical movement. The watch is housed on a deep orange velvet cushion within its rare gilt ‘Emerald Cut’ box with eagle motif on the lid, labelled on the inside for Elgin. The orange pad shows some signs of age but the watch and case are in very good condition for age. The watch is in working order. It is always a delight to find an item such as this within its original presentation box and this must add considerably to its appeal and collectibility.
Watch measures approximately 1.1 ins (2.8cm) x 0.7 ins (1.5cm). Band will fit a 6.25 ins wrist perfectly but can be extended to 6.5 ins. with the extension out fully. Total weight 102 grams. This item appears in my book, “How the Watch was Worn, A Fashion for 500 Years” on page 239. Insured Air Mail Post with tracking to the USA would be $50.00 USD - with no tracking is cheaper.
