This is a stylish 14 carat gold (as tested) brooch with a buckle theme with surrounding scrolls and engraving. At the bottom is a long upward curving pin which would hold a watch or even a locket, vinaigrette or large charm. It would be secured to the bodice with a barrel closure for security. Examples such as this can be seen in photographs of the late 19th - early 20th centuries with ladies wearing similar brooches holding an appropriate watch. These can be called a watch brooch, lapel watch, pendant watch, and corsage watch or brooch watch chatelaine. A number of images of this style of wearing a watch are illustrated in the book, “How the Watch was Worn, A Fashion for 500 Years”. It is very good condition and would be a very lovely item to wear with a small gold watch to make quite a fashion statement. Maximum width 1.5 4 ins (3.5cm). Weight 2 grams.
