This is an unusual French 18 carat gold and diamond brooch which is a watch holder as there is a hook at the back for attaching a watch or even a locket, vinaigrette or larger charm. The brooch itself is in the classic shape of a coiled griffin holding a diamond in its mouth. The brooch has a simple pin at the back with a v-shaped loop for attachment. At the bottom is a hidden hook to which an appendage would be attached. On the pin there is a mark which appears to be French and the piece tests as 18 carat gold. It is in excellent condition for age. This is a lovely quality piece that can be worn as a brooch or to hold other items as described. Width of actual brooch 1 ins (2.5cm). Weight 4 grams. This item appears in my book, “How the Watch was Worn, A Fashion for 500 Years” on the frontispiece and on page 117.
