This is an interesting pencil case as it is not only a cylinder for storing pencils but also has a rotating outer cylinder which enables it to become an early calculator. It is labelled ‘Darnley’s Patent Adjustable Lightning Calculator Pencil Case Ruler & Measure Solely British Made’ and is also marked British Patent No 167639. Next to this is the faint image of a gentleman with top hat and walking stick, which may be their logo. One end can be removed to reveal the space inside for the pencils, but it is currently empty. The calculator concentrates on multiplication and there is a ruler from 0-5 inches. The condition shows significant spotting and wear from age and use but it is still functioning. This is an interesting variation on the theme of a pencil case with multiple uses and would be of interest to those who collect writing and childhood items. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 349. Length 9 ins (22.8 cm) Diameter approximately 1 ins (2.5cm). Weight 114 grams.
