When looking at images of 18th century ladies, the skirts were extraordinarily wide – apparently even meaning that the ladies had to go through the door sideways! This appearance was created by the fullness of the gown and petticoat supported by a specifically-shaped pannier undergarment. It is virtually impossible to find an original 18th century pannier so this example has been beautifully crafted from original patterns by Val Button (United Kingdom). As can be seen in one of the images, this gives an amazingly authentic appearance to an original 18th century gown and would be fabulous with one of the gowns currently listed on my site (the cream, gold and lavender example). The actual item is created from calico over covered metal hoops and has a divided waistband with tapes that tie on each side and supporting bands of fabric inside for maintaining the position on the gown. This is therefore a super accessory for the presentation of this style of 18th century gown. It is a comparatively large and heavy item which will mean an appropriate level of shipping cost. It will come in its original protective, zippered garment bag.
