This is a delightful collectible as it is a book-form box containing a very small Salter spring balance scales used for checking the weight of letters or paper. The box has the apt title 'The Weight of Words' in gilt on the timber and cardboard frame covered with leatherette. The interior is accessed by sliding a cardboard “drawer” from inside and this contains the original scales. The main section of the scales is of a cream-coloured celluloid which has the maker’s name of Salter with a rope and anchor design and beneath this a scale of weights in ounces and a scale on the other side marked ‘D’ for old pence. It can be hung as it has a small hook at the top and has a small clip at the bottom for attachment of a document or envelope. The condition is very good for age with the box showing minimal rubbing and the scales appear to be functional. This would be a great addition to a collection of book-form boxes or one concentrating on a range of scales. The box measures 3.5 ins (8.8cm) x 2.25 ins (5.7cm). Weight 44 grams. This item appears in my book “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 234.
