In the era when paper was a more valued item and the computer did not exist, children used slates for writing and doing their “sums”. Here is an original slate tablet edged with timber combined with an original “Britannia” box of slate pencils. The pencils could be used on the slate and the slate wiped clean for re-use. The box of slate pencils has the image of Britannia with two flags, sailing ships on one side and army on the other, and the statement ‘Made in Germany’. Inside it is completely fitted with five full slate pencils. Both slate and pencils are in good condition for age although there are some signs of wear at the edges and folds of the cardboard box for the pencils. These two items are a delightful historical record of items for earlier education. Length slate tablet 9.5 ins (24cm) x width 7.25 ins (18.5cm). Combined weight 320 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 349.
