This is a most unusual item to have survived as it is a complete box of eight classic Clarke’s “Pyramid” Night Lights. The box has their label with a trademark and the stamp ‘By Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen Candle Makers’. The top also states ‘Plaster Base. No Water Required’ and ‘Price’s Patent Candle Company Limited. London’. At one end are the directions - which are shown in the image - but it is intriguing that this suggests a life of one hour, whereas the other end (also shown in an image) states that each night light will burn for 9 hours! Each of the eight candles has their original labels and the wicks have never been lifted. These are squat candles without the tapering top of the emotive ‘Burglar’s Horror’ (see such an example in another of our listings). These candles would have been used as part of a night light for little children or grown-up children who preferred some light in the black darkness that must have existed prior to the electricity age. This rare collectible is in very good condition for age with minimal staining and wear and would make a great addition to a collection of early lighting or domestic paraphernalia of an earlier era. Box measures 7 ins (17.8cm) x 3.5 ins (8.9cm). Each candle measures height 1.4 ins (3.5cm) with a diameter 1.6 ins (4cm). Weight 408 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 76.
