This layered sewing box, Shaker in origin, is a popular American style. The top lifts off to reveal eight spindles, corresponding with eight thread ports. There is a storage drawer at the bottom. An original paper label inside reads, 'Purchased June 1836 Susan A Clark Age 15'. The box includes two reels of silk thread, a packet of needles and a cream pincushion with deep pink decoration which could be used on a chatelaine or to replace the pincushion on the lid if preferred. In good condition, great original patina. There is a small hole to the bottom back and a couple of small chips on the corners. The original pin cushion that would have been attached to the top round handle is off and has been replaced with a smaller one. Length 5.25 ins (13.25cm), width 7 ins (17.75cm), height 7 ins (17.75cm). Weight 398 grams. This item can be seen in the book, "Antique Boxes - Inside and Out", on page 332.
