This is a lovely example of the craft of crochet. The pincushion has a crocheted top with a flower and leaf pattern and a wide colour-matching fringe. The lower surface of the pincushion is of a calico which is closed with two buttons and buttonholes (one button needs replacement). This means that the cover can be removed for washing and then replaced. This would have been used for pin and needles and possibly even for hatpins, and kept on a dressing table. The condition of the cover is very good for age apart from one button. The inner gold silk lining is possibly slightly distressed in spots but this does not detract from the piece. This would be a lovely addition to a collection of needle crafts or as part of a display. Without fringe 5.5 ins (14cm) square. Weight 196 grams.
