This is a very delightful and small jewelry box for little treasures and a charming example of the renowned Swiss Black Forest carving. Such carving has in the past been incorrectly described as being of German origin but was most likely made in Brienz, Switzerland. The box features a dear little bird perched on the lid and incised foliage decoration around the top and sides. It sits on four bun feet and is lined inside with deep blue velvet. There is a lock but no specific key. This was apparently a presentation box ‘From Mother Xmas 1918’. There is a possible small mark on the beak but in otherwise excellent condition. Length 4.25 ins (10.75cm), width 6 ins (15.25cm), depth 2.25 ins (5cm). Weight 246 grams. This item can be seen in the book, "Antique Boxes - Inside and Out", on page 60.
