This is a very beautiful Chinese purse for wearing at the waist. Its shape is consistent with it being a tobacco purse or pouch. It is constructed from turquoise blue silk and has lovely embroidery of pink flowers scattered amongst a lavender zigzag pattern. It is lined with cream fabric. The waist cord and cords for the tassels are in orange with decorative braid bands and the tassels themselves have an upper section that is cylindrical and wrapped with gold and silver-coloured thread, the tassels themselves being of greens and pinks. The condition is very good for age although there is very slight wear along the seams of the top and the top opening and one area of side seam has separated. The top edge has two small areas of fabric loss and there is a small area of staining near the bottom. Despite these non-intrusive flaws, they do not detract and this is really a most beautiful purse that would grace any collection of early Chinese embroideries or fashion accessories. Ex-collection of Linda Wrigglesworth. Maximum length of purse 5 ins (12.7cm), maximum width 3 ins (7.6cm). Weight 28 grams.
