It is special to find a matching pair of Chinese purses. This example is most attractive with fine tent stitch with intricate symbols and an edging in deep blue, turquoise and cream. The gathered opening is of black silk reinforced with card. It is of interest that the attached drawstrings are of a burgundy colour which indicates high rank. These strings are also decorated with braid and four ceramic decorative beads. The overall condition is very good for age but there is wear at the top gathering of the purses and a couple of small areas of fabric loss (one slightly larger area on the black silk). The embroidery itself is very fine and quality work. These would look very stylish hanging from the Mandarin’s belt that is currently available on this site. Ex-collection Linda Wrigglesworth. Each purse measures width 3.75 ins (9.5cm) by height 3 ins (7.5cm) Weight 34 grams.
