This is a brass cylindrical holder decorated with incised scrolling patterns. Each of the two sections has a wide brass ring and the rings are loosely held together by what appears to be a plaited silk fabric. When the two halves of the cylinder are opened, this reveals a space that would have held a brush for calligraphy. There is an inner metal tube which appears to have been wrapped into cylindrical shape. Apart from the fraying of the fabric, this item appears to be in very good condition for age and would be a most interesting example to a collection of earlier Tibetan fashion accessory for a specific purpose, ie calligraphy. Length 6.5 ins (16.5cm). Weight 72 grams. This item appears in my book, “Antique Boxes, Inside and Out” on page 342.
