This is another interesting product of the prestigious and renowned silversmith, Sampson Mordan. It is a sterling silver-based bristle pen wipe for use with a dip pen and is in the form of a shoe-shine or boot-brush box. It has little silver handles at the two sides and two rows of bristles horizontally and a larger area of vertical bristles. The base is plain deep green leatherette. It has the maker’s mark ‘S.M & Co’ on the side as well as the hallmarks for London, 1898. The condition of the whole piece is very good for age and this would make a special and stylish addition to a collection of pieces by Sampson Mordan, or for a collection of writing accessories of a previous era. Measures 2 ins (5cm) square. Weight 58 grams.
